For over 30 years, the site of the former Co-op on Dunfermline High Street has remained empty. While it’s served as a green space for the past two decades, it’s long been seen as a missed opportunity in the heart of our city.
Efforts were made to market the site for commercial development, but there was very little interest. That’s why, following the 2018 Dunfermline Charrette and community feedback, the Local Community Planning Partnership decided it was time to reimagine the space; not for business, but for people.
A bold new plan is now in motion to turn this long-vacant site into a vibrant, accessible public space for everyone to enjoy. The design, developed by Iglu Studio, will transform the area into two connected zones:
A new, fully accessible pathway will replace the current zig-zag route, making it easier for everyone to move through the space.
Contractors - Newlay Civil Eng Ltd will be carrying out the works and moved on site in September 2025.
We’re pleased to share that construction work is now underway at the site. The area has been safely closed off to allow contractors to begin the next phase of development.
As part of the preparation, all existing furniture has been removed. In addition, the artwork previously displayed on site is being carefully taken down and will be securely stored until a new permanent home is agreed.
We’ll continue to keep you updated as the project progresses. Thank you for your patience and support as we work to improve this space for the community.
The transformation is being funded through:
The site is located between Dunfermline High Street and the bus station on the site of the former Co-op building.
We’ll be sharing updates as the project progresses. Keep an eye on this page and Our Dunfermline Facebook page for the latest news.
