For over 30 years, the site of the former Co-op on Dunfermline High Street has remained empty. While it’s served as a green space for the past two decades, it’s long been seen as a missed opportunity in the heart of our city.
Efforts were made to market the site for commercial development, but there was very little interest. That’s why, following the 2018 Dunfermline Charrette and community feedback, the Local Community Planning Partnership decided it was time to reimagine the space; not for business, but for people.
A bold new plan is now in motion to turn this long-vacant site into a vibrant, accessible public space for everyone to enjoy. The design, developed by Iglu Studio, will transform the area into two connected zones:
A new, fully accessible pathway will replace the current zig-zag route, making it easier for everyone to move through the space.
Contractors - Newlay Civil Eng Ltd will be carrying out the works and moved on site in September 2025.
The transformation is being funded through:
The site is located between Dunfermline High Street and the bus station on the site of the former Co-op building.
We’ll be sharing updates as the project progresses. Keep an eye on this page and Our Dunfermline Facebook page for the latest news.
On 31 March 2026, the City of Dunfermline Area Committee approved Bruce Square as the name for the new city square.
Local people at various stages have helped with choosing a name and in the end ninety‑six young people whittled it down to one. Bruce Square received steady support and linked strongly with Dunfermline’s heritage.
Improvement works at Bruce Square are entering the final stages. In May we’ll be:
✅ Turfing landscaped areas
✅ Installing fencing and handrails
✅ Installing benches and furniture
✅ Completing footpath surfacing
🌦 Weather may affect progress.
We appreciate your patience as work continues at Bruce Square.
