Strengthening community safety through coordinated public awareness campaigns

During 2025/26, community safety partners across Fife delivered a coordinated programme of public awareness campaigns designed to help residents stay safe, informed and supported throughout the year. Working in partnership with Ford, Original 106 FM, K107 FM, Police Scotland, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and a range of national organisations, the campaign series focused on prevention, education and early intervention across a range of community safety issues.

The year-long programme brought together local expertise, trusted voices and targeted communications to raise awareness of risks affecting individuals, families and communities. Campaign themes were aligned to seasonal priorities, national awareness initiatives and local community safety concerns, ensuring that key messages were timely, relevant and accessible.

Seven campaigns were delivered across the year, covering responsible dog ownership around livestock and wildlife, child safety in the home, child car seat safety, noise-related antisocial behaviour, falls prevention, fitness to drive and eyesight awareness, and child safety during the festive period. Each campaign was designed to encourage people to reflect on their behaviour, understand potential risks and access practical advice to help keep themselves and others safe.

A key strength of the programme was the collaborative approach taken by partners. Campaign messages were recorded by officers and specialists from partner organisations, helping to provide consistent, trusted and evidence-based information. This partnership working ensured that residents received clear and reliable advice from organisations with expertise in each topic area while reinforcing shared community safety priorities across Fife.

Radio advertising formed the core of the campaign delivery, supported by digital content including short safety films shared through social media channels and QR-code linked resources displayed in forests, parks, estates and public venues. By combining traditional and digital communication channels, partners were able to extend the reach of safety messages and engage a broad audience across a variety of settings.

The campaigns were further supported by practical community engagement activities, helping residents turn awareness into action. These included Drivewise 65+ events, child car seat safety clinics, road safety pull-over events and community safety stalls at local events. These face-to-face opportunities enabled people to ask questions, receive personalised advice and build confidence in applying safety guidance in their daily lives.

The programme achieved significant reach throughout the year. Across Original 106 FM, 58 advertisements were broadcast during each campaign period, with an estimated audience reach of around 34,000 people per campaign. Messages were further amplified through K107 FM broadcasts, social media content and community engagement activities, helping to reinforce key safety messages through repeated and accessible communication. Social media activity generated shares, views and engagement, supporting wider dissemination of information across local communities.

The campaign series supports all three Plan for Fife priorities by promoting safer communities, improving health and wellbeing and strengthening partnership working across public services. The work contributes to reducing preventable harm, encouraging responsible behaviour and supporting communities to access information that can help prevent accidents, injuries and antisocial behaviour. It also demonstrates how public, private and third-sector partners can work collaboratively to reach people earlier and provide practical information before problems arise.

Looking ahead, partners will continue to build on the success of the campaign series by expanding the use of digital resources, including QR-linked safety content and interactive materials. Future plans include increasing community engagement opportunities, strengthening partner involvement, using local intelligence and community safety data to shape campaign themes, and gathering further feedback from residents to inform future activity. By continuing to combine targeted communications with practical community engagement, the partnership aims to help more people across Fife stay safe, informed and connected to the support available within their communities.
