Imagining the Future of Healthcare in Fife

Imagining the future of healthcare in Fife

In May 2024, NHS Fife and the University of St Andrews brought together 57 participants from health, academia, industry, and the community to explore how innovation could improve healthcare delivery across the region. The event, ‘Imagining the Future of Healthcare’, focused on practical, locally driven ideas that could make a real difference to patients and staff.

The workshop used a World Café format to encourage open discussion and co-design. Ten priority themes emerged, including improving unscheduled care, expanding home-based services, and using digital tools to support patients and reduce admin for staff. Nine of these ideas moved forward to project scoping, with two to three selected for further development through joint teams and targeted funding.

The partnership has already made progress. At the NHS Fife–University Research Symposium in November 2024, two standout projects were shared:

  • One using AI to automate operational responses, now under governance review
  • Another using NHS data to improve care pathways for people with long-term conditions, now moving toward funding

In March 2025, the Delivering a Better Health Future for Scotland symposium, hosted by the University’s School of Medicine, reinforced the value of this partnership. It highlighted how local institutions can work together to tackle health inequalities and support inclusive economic growth.

This work supports several ambitions in the Plan for Fife, including:

  • Joined-up public services – through collaboration between NHS Fife and the University
  • Tackling poverty and ill health – by improving access and outcomes in healthcare
  • Community wealth building – by anchoring innovation and job creation locally
  • Addressing the climate emergency – by exploring more efficient, tech-enabled care models

Work is ongoing to develop the most promising ideas into fully funded projects. Plans are also in motion for a Fife Anchor Summit, which will bring together partners to explore how public institutions can support health, wellbeing, and local economic resilience over the long term.
