Mitigating drug-related deaths by building skills and support in the community

Fife Alcohol and Drug Partnership (ADP) leads a range of work to reduce harm, reduce substance related death and improve the lives of people affected by alcohol and drug use.

KY Clubs are one stop shops for support, developed in places with high risk of drug related death and overdose. Developed in collaboration with partners and people with lived experience, the clubs reduce isolation by providing a safe, warm and welcoming space and access to a range of supports, including housing, welfare checks and mental health support, as well as addiction services.

This approach is helping people who haven’t accessed support via existing referral processes. KY Clubs running in Methil, Kirkcaldy and Lochgelly are attracting good levels of attendance each week. HMIe inspectors recently highlighted work at the KY8 Club in Methil as “helping reduce stigma associated with problem drug use… increasing access to services to those that would benefit most”.

The ADP also extended overdose awareness and Take Home Naloxone (THN) training. THN is a medication administered to reverse the effects of an opiate overdose; a vital tool to help reduce harm. Some 1900 people were trained in THN in 2023-24 including family members, people at risk, and communities and businesses in areas with high levels of drug related harm is high.
