Turning Scotland’s newest city into a top tourist destination

Turning Scotland’s newest city into a top tourist destination

In June 2023, Fife Council commissioned a tourism evaluation for Dunfermline, which covered:

  • city tourism trends
  • a local product audit to demonstrate Dunfermline’s competitiveness as a city break destination
  • a travel trade point of view to consider how best to attract tour operators to the city
  • a comparative destinations review
  • recommendations, priorities and actions

Based on this study, a multi-agency five year action plan was developed to increase visitor numbers, length of stay and local spend - and to ensure businesses are equipped to work with the tourism industry to maximise the visitor experience. Good progress has been made in its first year.

The City Square design process has been completed and the project is in delivery phase. Plans are also underway to create city quarters with a distinct look and feel.

A new “Invest in Dunfermline” prospectus was published, containing a section on tourism opportunities in the city. A travel trade support programme included training for businesses, a brochure for tour operators including a series of itineraries, a Dunfermline stand at VisitScotland Connect, and a hosted visit for tour operators.

Dunfermline.com has been developed as a destination website for the public and a winter/spring marketing campaign has covered social media channels and led to online articles in the Daily Record, Chronicle Live (North East England) and Manchester Evening News among other titles.
