Widening Access to Higher Education

Widening Access to Higher Education

The University of St Andrews is taking meaningful steps to widen access to higher education for students from underrepresented and disadvantaged backgrounds. Through a combination of contextual admissions, supported pathways, and targeted outreach, the University is working to ensure that no applicant with the potential to succeed is held back by their circumstances.

In 2023, over 12% of Scottish-domiciled entrants came from SIMD Quintile 1 postcodes, and 3% of home-funded entrants were care experienced. These figures reflect the growing impact of the University’s fair access work.

Support doesn’t stop at the point of entry. Students benefit from pre-arrival and transitional support to help them settle in and thrive. The University also offers part-time study options and lifelong learning opportunities, including the MA Combined Studies programme and upskilling courses for adult learners.

A range of outreach programmes further supports this work:

  • First Chances Fife works with pupils across most Fife secondary schools to raise aspirations and support progression to university.
  • Sutton Trust Summer Schools offer state school pupils a free, week-long experience of university life.
  • Experience Medicine, delivered in partnership with NHS Fife, provides hands-on insight into medical careers.
  • Access to Rural Communities (ARC) supports young learners from rural areas in their journey to higher education.
  • National Schools Programme (Reach) focuses on access to high-demand professions.

Scholarships such as the Chemistry Wardlaw and Dr Andrew Noble Wardlaw awards provide financial support specifically for students from Fife.

This work contributes directly to the Plan for Fife ambitions, particularly in improving educational attainment, and supporting inclusive economic growth. The University continues to build on this progress, with a focus on long-term impact and stronger community connections.
