New Campaign to help six million in furniture and appliance poverty

New data released today shows that around 9 million adults in Britain now have less than £250 in savings - making the upfront purchase of an essential appliance impossible (Fair4All Finance).

Gail Porter, Patron of the Fair Credit Charity which set up ethical lender, Fair for You CIC has raised that :

“Six million people are living without household essentials right now, and many of those won’t have access to charity support or local council grants - nor do many want to use them. A helping hand from an ethical, not for profit lender like Fair for You, can help them make their house a home. The alternative is living in deep deprivation, which I have experienced, or being burned by high-cost credit, or the exploitative tactics of illegal lenders.”

The campaign aims to get more people to spread the cost of essential purchases with ethical lenders like Fair for You or local credit unions, who will only lend what people can afford, and provide customers with control over repayments.

Kingdom Credit Union – Stop Loan Sharks Charter Mark

Kingdom Community Bank recently achieved their Stop Loan Sharks Charter Mark award, showing their commitment to ending illegal money lending in Fife's communities.

They will be spearheading some local awareness raising work across Fife and will be reaching out to a wide range of partners in advance of that.

Extending Child Benefit by 31 August

Child Benefit can be claimed for children after they turn 16 if they are staying on in approved education or training. Child Benefit can continue to be paid for children who are studying full time in non-advanced education, which includes:

  • Scottish Highers
  • Home education - if it started before their child turned 16, or after 16 if they have a statement of special educational needs and it was assessed by the local authority
  • NVQs, up to level 3

Child Benefit will also continue for children studying on unpaid approved training courses:

  • in Scotland: the No One Left Behind programme.

To make sure they do not miss out, parents can quickly and easily extend their Child Benefit claim online on GOV.UK or via the HMRC app

The Average Earning Threshold (AET) has changed.

You may be coming across people who were on what was referred to as, ‘light touch’ work commitment because they were working part-time, who are now having to find more hours and are back on intensive work search with new commitments.

The threshold is now 30 hours.

In many cases people may have not mentioned their health conditions to DWP due to being able to work part-time but they might not be able to do this increased amount due to their health.

DWP can consider health restrictions to someone increasing their hours.

There is obviously issues for some people with sourcing childcare.

Armed Service Advice Project (ASAP) comes to an end

Citizen’s Advice and Rights Fife (CARF) have reported that funding for the Armed Services Advice Project will cease on 31st October 2024.  This project is delivered nationally and there has been a dedicated member of staff on the project in Fife since May 2017.

Citizens Advice Scotland CEO, Derek Mitchell has released a statement on ASAP: “We regret very much that the funding for the ASAP project, delivered through our CABs along with their general work, has come to an end. Throughout the armed services community, ASAP has become respected and trusted by individuals and organisations across Scotland. We are aware that this means some CABs will need to redeploy resources and our colleagues from the National Projects team are connecting with these CABs as they make decisions on this."
